German Gene Bank for Fruit Crops

The German Gene Bank for Fruit Crops (DGO) was founded in 2007 as a decentralised gene bank network in order to facilitate the conservation of fruit genetic resources for the future and utilise fruit genetic resources sustainably. In 2004, the Federal Plant Variety Office was tasked with the conservation of plant genetic resources for certain types of fruit by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). The Federal Plant Variety Office is a founding member of the DGO and collection partner in the apple, cherry, plum, raspberry, blackberry and strawberry networks. In addition, the Federal Plant Variety Office coordinates the gene bank network for raspberries and blackberries, as well as the pear and wild fruit networks, which are currently in development. The Federal Plant Variety Office is a member of the DGO expert advisory committee, which provides advice and support to the gene bank network and the collection partners. The Federal Plant Variety Office is also a partner in the European Gene Bank Network for Ribes Species (RIBESCO) and adds its accessions for these species into the database of the European Programme on Cooperation for Plant Genetic Resources (ECPGR). The living samples in the Federal Plant Variety Office fruit gene banks are located at our Wurzen testing station. The varieties are stored and documented there and propagation material for the varieties is provided to third parties on request.

Additional information can be found on German Gene Bank for Fruit Crops (DGO) website.
