Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO)

The Common Market has compelled all members of the EU to further co-ordinate their variety testing and their seed certification systems. Since April 27, 1995 an EU variety protection decree has made possible application for and granting of Plant Breeders´ Rights which are valid throughout the EU. The Common Plant Variety Office (CPVO) in Angers is responsible for the European Plant Breeders' Rights. The CPVO does not keep one technical test sites and therefore the office assigns the testing of varieties to national variety offices. Here the Bundessortenamt tests many varieties of numerous plant species for distinctness, uniformity and stability on behalf of the CPVO. The Bundessortenamt is represented by experts in the committees of this European authority.
